What is Body Stress Release?
BSR is a complementary health technique that is relatively new to the UK. It was developed in South Africa in the 1980s by two chiropractors and is now practiced in 12 countries worldwide.

People often ask what BSR is like and how it compares to any other technique they may have tried. To understand BSR it really needs to be experienced.

BSR is a holistic complementary health technique - it assesses the whole body for stored tension and works with the body’s natural predisposition to be stress-free. It is a gentle procedure which does not require forceful manipulations of the body, massage, use of machines or medication. Clients are often amazed that such a gentle technique can be so effective.

What is Body Stress?
Everyday we are exposed to different sorts of stress: physical (such as an injury, strain, or prolonged bad posture), chemical (such as air pollutants or chemicals in our food) and, of course, mental or emotional stress.

When this stress builds up and the body gets overloaded, it is unable to adapt and tension becomes stored in physical structures such as muscles. This is called ‘body stress’.

Body stress may result in pain, stiffness, numbness or postural distortion. Tense muscles may put pressure on nerves disturbing the body’s communication system and reducing the efficiency of the natural healing process.

A person with body stress may also feel tense, tired and lacking in energy and enthusiasm for life.

The Consultation
When you decide to try BSR your practitioner will book you in for three initial appointments over a two week period. You may need further appointments – this depends on the individual. It is important that you attend all three appointments as BSR is a process.

During your first appointment the practitioner takes a detailed case history. You then lie down fully clothed on the specially designed BSR couch while the tests and releases are carried out. Certain areas may feel quite sensitive, but many people find the releases so relaxing that they fall asleep.

The nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue and organ in your body. BSR uses information provided by the body (via a neuro-muscular reflex) to identify where abnormal muscle tension may be reducing the efficiency of the nervous system and disturbing the ability of the body to heal and maintain itself.

Once located, the tension (or ‘body stress’) is “released” using a light but definite pressure. Releasing is often rapid, but if the stress has been stored for a long time, more releases may be needed. This is because the tight, protective layers of muscle seem to relax back to their normal state by degrees.

After the releases, your practitioner will explain what she has found and give you some simple advice and self-help techniques.
